What Happens In A Kundalini Yoga Class?
Kundalini Yoga follows a certain structure because this way we can be sure to stimulate our
energy safely, effectively, and gain the results/benefits that we want. It uses mantras to set the energetic vibration for the class. The science and technology of a mantra uses sound as a form of energy. We can project energy and meaning through sound.
We begin by chanting two mantras three times,
Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo
This mantra means, “I bow to the Creator, to the Divine Teacher within”. Tuning in with this mantra helps
us to relax, get centred, grounded, puts our mind in a meditative state and connects us to the teacher/wisdom within us, followed by the mantra for protection,
Aad Guray Nameh, Jugaad Guray Nameh, Sat Guray Nameh, Siri Guru Dayvay Nameh.
This mantra means ‘I bow to the Primal Wisdom, I bow to the Wisdom through the Ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the great unseen Wisdom.
Awakening our body with gentle exercises allowing our body to warm up, soften and opening up the circulation to get the energy flowing before we start the kriya.
In each class we do a kriya, which is a specific set of yogic exercises that were put together to create specific outcome or purpose. There are thousands of kriyas to choose from which work on all aspects of the body, mind, emotions and soul.
After the kriya there is a period of deep relaxation in savasana or corpse pose. This is a blissful experience and allows the body and mind to relax completely and absorb the effects of the kriya, gives space for rejuvenation bringing healing and balance to the body. This is where the transformation happens.
Helping us to cleanse and calm our mind, rejuvenate after a stressful day, manage stress in the moment and to create a stillness within yourself. Meditations can include: hand position (mudra), eye focus, breath and mantra chanting.
We close the class with a beautiful blessing prayer for ourselves, others and the world by chanting The Long Time Sun along with three repetitions of Sat Nam. It opens a path of love, light and inner guidance for our lives.
May The Long Time Sun Shine Upon You,
All Love Surround You, And The Pure Light Within You, Guide Your Way On.
Satnam, Satnam, Satnam
(Sat Nam is our true identity, the infinite potential within us, the divine in us. Truth is my Identity/Name. Chanted three times.)
